Professionalization?

  • Professionalization means to recognize the skills and experiences needed to become a professional fish harvester.

  • Fishermen can regulate their own profession by setting training and experience standards needed to do their job.

Why Should Fishermen Professionalize?

  • The future will face a shortage of new entrants coming into the industry.  Having a recognized professional industry will attract more new people into the profession.

  • Professionalization would set the criteria for new entrants.

  • It would recognize the training fishermen have already done.

  • Today's fishermen are faced with new challenges that demand new knowledge and skills.

  • The fishing industry is sometimes portrayed as a "job of last resort". Professionalization would make society realize that fishing takes skills, and has a large impact on coastal communities across Canada.

  • Fishermen need to be part of the decision making process for training requirements regulated by government. By having a Professionalization body in place, an industry voice on training needs can
    be provided.

  • Recognize fishing as a career not a job just anyone can do.

  • Allow Fishermen to steer their own course.
